12:40 am - Umineko no Naku Koro ni episode 5: End of the golden witch - PART X Erika probably wiretaps everyone in the country and scales buildings while wearing a school-issued swimsuit.
This is PART X.

Beatrice can't use Kumasawa or Gohda for her arguments anymore, so she goes for another approach. How about Nanjo? He was together with Erika in the lounge until 3 o'clock, but no one knows what happened after that.
Isn't it possible for Nanjo in the guest house to commit the crimes?

Nanjo stands and testifies that he was indeed with Erika and Gohda in the lounge from 1 o'clock to 3 o'clock. Bernkastel affirms it in red. "I'll comply. Erika, Nanjo, and Gohda spent 1 o'clock in the morning to 3 o'clock in the morning in the lounge on the first floor of the guest house."

With each proven alibi for someone other than Natsuhi, Beatrice's existence is denied and she suffers pain.
"If so, then he must not have an alibi for before and after the period of time he spent in the lounge! It is possible for Nanjo to commit the crimes!"

Erika was playing cards with the cousins up to 24 o'clock. Then she went downstairs and saw Nanjo. Erika borrowed a key from Gohda to get into the guest house library, and she checked and reset her door gimmick on Gohda before she left him. Erika and Nanjo talked passionately about the numerous volumes of foreign mystery books written in English in the library, since both of them understood the language. They moved into the library and stayed there until they returned to the lounge.
"I'll comply. After 24 o'clock, Erika was together with Nanjo all the way until 3 o'clock in the morning."

When Erika and Nanjo left the library at 1 o'clock, they ran into Rosa, who was just getting back to the guest house. Erika notified Gohda, who came out to greet Rosa. Rosa rejected Gohda's offer of service and directly went upstairs. After that, Erika, Nanjo, and Gohda went to the lounge and chatted until 3 o'clock, when Battler returned to the guest house. Erika, Nanjo, and Battler went to the second floor to sleep. Before she went to her room, Erika put another paper gimmick on the door of Nanjo's room. When Battler screamed in the morning, Erika immediately checked Nanjo's door, and saw that the paper was still there. So Nanjo never left his room between 3 o'clock to morning.
Nanjo has an alibi.

For Natsuhi, her alibi is only lost for the time period between 24 o'clock and 1 o'clock. With that as evidence, she is claimed to be the culprit.
However, as long as the following possibilities exist, you cannot conclude so.
■ Isn't it possible for Battler in the guest house to commit the crimes? ■ Isn't it possible for Nanjo in the guest house to commit the crimes? ■ Isn't it possible for Gohda in the guest house to commit the crimes? ■ Isn't it possible for Kumasawa in the guest house to commit the crimes? ■ Isn't it possible for Genji in the mansion to commit the crimes? ■ Isn't it possible for Krauss in the mansion to commit the crimes? ■ Excluding Natsuhi, isn't there the possibility for someone else in the mansion to commit the crimes? ■ Is there the possibility that George and the others actually pretended they were killed? ■ Is there the possibility to reach the second floor without passing through the lounge Erika was in? ■ Is there the possibility for the crimes to have been committed before 24 o'clock? ■ Is there the possibility that the crimes were committed after 3 o'clock? ■ Is there the possibility to commit the crimes other than during the time period between 24 o'clock and 1 o'clock? ■ Is there the possibility for someone in the mansion to commit the crimes during the time period between 24 o'clock and 3 o'clock?

"That's wonderful, Erika. Both your seals and the red truth are perfect. Nanjo has the alibi of having been together with Erika until 3 o'clock in the morning. And from 3 o'clock in the morning and on, he did not leave his room until morning."
So there, now all suspects in the guest house have alibis. ...Any questions? Beatrice wrecks her brain, trying to think of a contradiction, but there is none. Lambdadelta agrees with Erika. She doesn't see any problems with them.
Battler bolts up from his seat. What about him? Erika hasn't proved his alibi yet. Shouldn't Battler be the most suspicious, since he slept alongside the victims? A golden whip immediately lashes Battler's cheeks, since he spoke out of order. Battler winces in pain, cursing the Siestas.

Isn't it possible for Battler in the guest house to commit the crimes?
Erika never visited the cousins' room after 3 o'clock. How can she know what happened there after 3 o'clock? Did she duck into his room and spend the night staring at Battler's sleeping mug?
"I, Furudo Erika, can prove that Battler-san returned to the cousins' room at 3 o'clock in the morning, immediately slid into bed, and directly went to sleep. And I can also prove that nothing happened in the room until he got up, noticed the wretched scene in the room, and screamed."

Erika's room is right next door to the cousins' room. The wall between the two rooms is thin. Erika spent the entire night up with her ear plastered to the wall, listening for anything unusual. Her hearing is perfect; she cannot miss or mishear anything.
"Yes. Without even sleeping a wink, I had my ear to the wall and kept watch until morning."
Everyone in the room is speechless. Erika actually spent the entire night eavesdropping on Battler's room. She had good reason to spy on Battler. He inherited the Master's ring, so he seemed like the prime target for falling victim to the epitaph.
It is impossible for Battler to commit the crimes.

"...The ability acknowledged by the detective's authority, huh? I can't help but acknowledge it. I'll confirm it in red...! Ushiromiya Battler returned to the cousins' room at 3 o'clock in the morning and immediately went to bed. And until the discovery of the incident, nothing suspicious ever happened in the room!"

"In short, it means it was impossible for Battler to commit murder or even wound the bodies."

Beatrice is taken back by Bernkastel and Lambdadelta ganging up on her. Their red words mean a lot more than just proving that Battler couldn't have done it. First, they confirmed that the murders could not have been committed after 3 o'clock, because Erika listened in for the entire time. Since it has been confirmed that the cousins were still alive at 24 o'clock, the time of murders automatically becomes between 24 o'clock and 3 o'clock. Therefore, it automatically proves the alibis of people who weren't in the guest house before 3 o'clock.
It is impossible that the crimes were committed after 3 o'clock in the morning.

Simply by presenting the situation in the guest house, it seems like no one else could've visited the guest house between midnight and 3 to commit the murders.
Everyone in the guest house has an alibi. The murders did not occur before 24 o'clock. The murders could not have occurred after 3 o'clock. By the process of elimination, the only scenario possible is that someone in the mansion committed the crimes between 24 o'clock and 3 o'clock.
Is there the possibility for someone in the mansion to commit the crimes during the time period between 24 o'clock and 3 o'clock?

It would've been hard for that person. Erika was in the lounge of the guest house, which anyone going to the second floor must pass through.
Is there the possibility to reach the second floor without passing through the lounge Erika was in?

"I've already said so, and my Master has fully declared it with the red truth, too. I was in the lounge on the first floor of the guest house. And you must pass through the lounge to reach the second floor. In short, it means it was impossible to reach the second floor without catching my eye." "What if that wasn't impossible? For example, propping up a ladder against the outer wall of the guest house and breaking in via a second floor window! There must exist a method to reach the second floor without passing through the lounge! If this is so, then it is possible to reach the crime scene without catching your eye...!"
Erika takes Beatrice's argument in stride. She reiterates that she has no blind spots, physically or mentally, in the lounge, so it's impossible for someone to have used the stairs.

"It is impossible to reach the second floor of the guest house without making it known by someone who was in the lounge. ...Of course this only applies to reaching the second floor from the inside."
As for the outside, there are tall trees and ladders handy, and someone could've even clambered up the gutters and drainpipe. Erika couldn't have patrolled outside the guest house, since she was indoors the entire time. Even if she looked out the windows, she wouldn't have been able to see everything.
Erika definitely couldn't have prevented someone from climbing to the second floor. However, she was able to prevent people from breaking in. Right after she returned from the Golden Land, Erika went about sealing all of the windows, not just by locking them, but putting her door gimmick on every one of them.
Lambdadelta finds it difficult to believe that Erika actually managed to reach all of the windows from the outside, in that downpour of a weather and in her cumbersome attire.

...Erika smiles and reveals that she had changed into her swimsuit from when she was adrift at sea. In the rain, she scaled the walls on her own and sealed every single window and all other possible routes of entry on the first and second floor. If she could stay up all night listening in to a room, then it's not hard to imagine she could crawl over an entire building.
If Erika was just a regular person, then doing crazy things like that at the house of a family that just graciously took her in isn't normal. But she is a witch's game piece after all. As a detective, Erika memorized everyone's name and the layout of the buildings, preparing to confirm alibis and anything that could possibly occur. She'd be a third-rate detective if she didn't do any work beforehand.
There is no method to reach the second floor without passing through the lounge.

"...Yeah, I'll acknowledge it. Erika, your seals were perfect. I'll acknowledge them in red. You can't reach the second floor of the guest house if you don't pass through the lounge, and it's impossible to reach it without letting Erika know, while she was in the lounge!"

"Thank you very much, Lady Lambdadelta...! According to the above, the following is confirmed, Great Lady Beatrice! According to the above, the time of the crime is limited to the hour between 24 o'clock, when I confirmed their living status, and 1 o'clock in the morning, when my get-together began in the lounge!"

While Erika was absorbed in chatting with Nanjo in the library from midnight to 1, she wouldn't have noticed if someone went into the guest house during that time period. What a terrible mistake on the detective's part, Erika says, with a deceitful smile. She put all that effort into securing the guest house but left such an obvious opening?
It's a trap. Erika knows only Natsuhi has no alibi for that time period.
It is only possible to commit the crimes between 24 o'clock and 1 o'clock.

For Natsuhi, her alibi is only lost for the time period between 24 o'clock and 1 o'clock. With that as evidence, she is claimed to be the culprit.

It could've been one long, long night for the culprit to carry out the murders, but now it has been narrowed down to just a single hour.
"Yes, that's right. At the moment of 24 o'clock, in the hallway of the second floor of the mansion were Natsuhi, Krauss, and Genji. All of the rest of the people were in the dining room on the first floor. And just as you know, there was the mysterious knock and the letter with the one-winged crest appeared. Then the discussions over it dragged on and on until 1 o'clock in the morning. I'll say it with the red truth. Until 1 o'clock in the morning, not a single person out of all people in the dining room withdrew from the dining room...!"

Excluding Natsuhi, Krauss, and Genji, none of the people in the mansion left the mansion until 1 o'clock.

For Natsuhi, her alibi is only lost for the time period between 24 o'clock and 1 o'clock. With that as evidence, she is claimed to be the culprit.
However, as long as the following possibilities exist, you cannot conclude so.

How could've Erika known?! She was in the guest house! She didn't put some door gimmick on the mansion! Where's the proof?!
"The red truth is simply the truth, there is no need for evidence, proof, or the room for debate!! ...It's the rule you made. Kukkukukukukuku*giggle*giggle*giggle*giggle* fufufuhahahahahahahahahaha...!!"

The only people left who need proven alibis are these three: Natsuhi, Krauss, and Genji.
No, two.
Once Krauss and Genji's alibis are proven, the culprit can be no other than Natsuhi...!
Erika tackles Genji's case first. It's possible that he might have killed the first four people, then committed suicide. He was alone in the servants' room when he relayed the phone call for Natsuhi.
Isn't it possible for Genji in the mansion to commit the crimes?

"I'll say it in red. After Genji finished relaying the phone call, he immediately returned straight to the sleeping quarters. Simply and cruelly the truth, no evidence or proof, seal or alibi, right?"

At 1 o'clock, the family meeting took a short break. Rosa exited the mansion and returned to the guest house. Eva taught Erika the paper-in-the-door trick, and she was also suspicious that something bad might occur this night. So she collaborated with Erika and set the paper on the door of the servants' sleeping quarters in the mansion, too.
Genji's murder is also limited to between 24 o'clock and 1 o'clock.

Kanon and Kumasawa saw the seal on the door when they broke it to get into the room and wake Genji up.
"With the red truth, I'll guarantee that Eva, Kanon, and Kumasawa's testimonies just now are the truth. Eva put a seal on Genji's sleeping quarters at 1 o'clock in the morning, and it was broken by Kanon and Kumasawa when they discovered his incident in the morning. It's complicated, so I'll add more to it. During the short break at 1 o'clock in the morning, the first to leave the dining room were Rosa and Eva. All of the humans in the dining room stayed there until Eva returned. Eva, after seeing Rosa off, went to the sleeping quarters and did the seal. Undoubtedly, she never went inside the room in that case."
It's not like the red truths don't have any backing; in the human world, Erika investigated everything within her power in addition to getting people's testimonies.

Erika swaggers down the cathedral, proudly touting her scientific knowledge. Taking fingerprints with aluminum powder. Analyzing the mud caked on the underside of shoes. Erika went in and out of Kinzo's study room and arbitrarily used the various reference books, substances, and instruments provided there, all without the permission of the family. No one interfered. Game pieces cannot obstruct a detective's work. That is the detective's authority.
Erika didn't explain much in detail, but she produced answers that sound convincing enough, even if there is no red truth in the human world.
It has already been said with the red truth that after relaying the phone call to Natsuhi, Genji returned straight to the sleeping quarters.
With Erika's scientific investigations as the basis and further combined with the red truth, she declared that Genji did not leave the mansion after 24 o'clock...

Genji has an alibi.

Seeing that the murder suspects are now narrowed down to just Krauss and herself, Natsuhi is dumbstruck, opening and closing her mouth like a goldfish, unable to even muster a complete word.
Bernkastel offers Natsuhi a final chance to save herself. She can blame all of the crimes on Krauss, who has no proven alibi yet, and walk away scot-free from the trial.

Thanks for the installment! Can't wait for the next portion.
I'm amazed at how annoying Erika is.

Gee and no one noticed all the paper in the doors and windows much less Erika scrambling around in a swimsuit setting them all? She seems like the most suspicious person in the mansion.
I find it ridiculous, too. Wouldn't the rain have washed away all of the paper? Maybe Erika used something else. Or it's just Ryukishi being uncreative in setting up a way for Bernkastel to speak the red truth.
...This is guesswork on my part; I'm pretty much playing the game in real time. I don't really know what the conclusion of the story is.

Nau, I think it's just Ryukushi getting all the stuff out of the way so that you can get onto the real meat of the story. I mean, I don't know about you, but just listening to alibis left and right can really pull one's attention apart...
Anyways, thanks for uploading your screenshots and summaries! It's really tricky not being able to read nor understand Japanese, especially for otome games and VN/SNs. :(
Just want to say thank you for doing all of this. Been really curious to all the spoilers I've been hearing, and it's nice to be able to read this.
Thanks for this installment, too- looking forward to the next one. 8D
I agree how it's kind of odd that no-one noticed all the paper (assuming it's paper) everywhere- not to mention Erika scaling the mansion in her swimsuit. .___.; (Kind of scary, in a way. If a guest started doing that on an apparently random whim...).
Thanks again.

Wow, seriously Erika is epicly obssessed or something. I'm getting all sorts of weird imagery of her eavesdropping on people ninja-style while dressed in a sukumizu.
And thanks for doing this for us non-Japanese reading fans of Umineko. God knows how much longer to wait for WH (meanwhile...), heh. Well hopefully before Episode VI is out... :P

Everyone in the room is speechless. Erika actually spent the entire night eavesdropping on Battler's room.
Erika, I hope you understand that even for a detective, that's a little creepy... |
