12:03 am - Umineko no Naku Koro ni episode 5: End of the golden witch - PART IX
It's going to be a repeat of the locked room situation. Someone please give Natsuhi a break. The Witch praised her nobility!

Also, HOLY MARCONIS WHAT LEGALESE I DON'T EVEN-

This is PART IX.

It is 12:33.

In order to smoke out the murderer, Erika questions everyone very closely, verifying their evidence and alibi. What she knows is, Battler returned to the guest house around 3 o'clock and everyone else went about their ways during the 30 minutes afterwards.

Ronove wonders if they'll going to have a tough time getting past this tight spot like with the study room. Beatrice scoffs. Kinzo has already escaped from the mansion and he can't ever be caught now. She won't let Erika deny the existence of witches.

Gaap opens up a giant pit of blackness that swallows all, taking them to a world where its location and time are meaningless.
This is the underside of the chessboard.
No, it's the most appropriate to call it the place where game pieces go when they exit the game.

A faint spotlight illuminates five bodies.
George, Jessica, Maria, Rosa, and Genji.
They are all lying face-up, with their eyes closed and hands clasped. Looks like Gaap gave the dead their dignity.
Their throats are slit wide open for good reason.

"...I see. It means no matter who looks upon George, Jessica, Maria, Rosa, and Genji's bodies, anyone can affirm that they are dead with a single glance."

"Hm? In red? Oh well, I won't start getting frugal with you, Teacher. That's right, those are bodies that absolutely aren't pretending to be dead, and anyone can affirm that they are dead with a single glance."

Gaap is somewhat annoyed. She spent time and effort on making the bodies disappear completely, and here Beatrice and Virgilia just confirmed their existence.

The epitaph has already been solved, so Beatrice's goal has primarily turned into protecting Natsuhi.

Natsuhi is the only person who doesn't have an alibi for the first night, since she stayed alone in her room until morning. Therefore the suspicion is the greatest on her, and Erika just might corner her into checkmate with it.
Beatrice had Gaap move the bodies while Natsuhi was with other people so that it would create an alibi for her. Obviously, then, Natsuhi couldn't have moved the bodies. The attention shifted toward it being the work of witches and magic, thus lifting some of the suspicion off Natsuhi.

There is another trap to mind.
The man from 19 years ago who Lambdadelta put into the game.
Beatrice is confident that she won't lose against him, either.

Natsuhi smashes her cup of tea to the floor.
"...Wh-what do you mean by that...?!! A-are you saying that I am, ...suspicious?!!"

Erika has indeed caught onto Natsuhi's lack of an alibi for the first night. Natsuhi vehemently denies any wrongdoing. How could she kill own daughter?

Natsuhi becomes fed up with the accusations and tells them she'll only talk to the police once they arrive. Then she announces that she's retiring to her room, and leaves the reception room all by herself.

Natsuhi pretended to be hurt and threw the cup so that she would have an excuse for getting out of the room.
It's almost 13 o'clock. She needs to go hide in that closet as per the mystery man's orders.

At the door of the guest room, Natsuhi panics for a moment. The servants usually keep unused room locked and this is one of them. What if Natsuhi can't even get into the room?

She gently twists the doorknob and finds the door unlocked, much to her relief. But maybe that man left the door unlocked in advance for her...?

The guest room is cold and still. The closet stands off to the side against the wall.

Natsuhi closes the door behind her and puts up the door chain. The door can't be locked from the inside, but no one should be able to get past the door and find her.
However, she must remain cautious, since she's supposed to be in her own room and not exist here. By putting up the chain for a room that contains 'no one', Natsuhi has created a locked room. If Erika goes on a detective spree and try to enter this guest room, she'll definitely notice the chain and raise a ruckus.

Imagining that scenario, Natsuhi decides to leave the room unchained after all.

Did the man want to isolate Natsuhi so that she becomes an easy target for him?
Trying hard to not think about turning up as the next murdered victim, Natsuhi clambers into the man-sized closet and shuts it.
It's pitch-dark, too dark to tell the time by. Natsuhi will have to open the closet door by a crack to check the clock.
At least the closet is lined with plush fabric. She should be able to sit there for an hour without getting an incredibly sore back or butt.

In the closet, Natsuhi has nothing to do but to ruminate. Natsuhi's room is always locked and no one can pick the lock. It's probable that one of the servants is collaborating with the man, since someone must have used the servants' master key to enter the room and place the Autumn card there.

How did the man know Natsuhi's favorite season is Autumn? She has never revealed it to anyone, not even her husband.
...Ah, that's right. Natsuhi did tell someone. Just once. A few years back. To Shannon.

I've only told Shannon that I love Autumn.

This becomes a solid evidence that she is someone in the culprit's gang...

Shannon must be in cahoots with the man, then, Natsuhi realizes. She begins to boil with anger, but forces herself to calm down.
Natsuhi almost feels like thanking the man, because she probably wouldn't have figured it out without the darkness and confinement of the closet that made her mull over things.

Suddenly, Natsuhi hears someone entering the room.

It's Hideyoshi. He's surprised that the room is unlocked and goes to close the door and apply the chain.

Natsuhi's heart races as she fervently prays that Hideyoshi won't open the closet and find her. Is he collaborating with the man, too? Or did the man set this up, to have her and Hideyoshi in the same room? Or maybe Hideyoshi is benign and unaware of Natsuhi's presence?
Natsuhi's frenetic thoughts aren't helping with her migraine.

Hideyoshi walks past the closet and closes the window shutters, then plops down on the bed.

A strange, muffled sound.
Natsuhi listens a little closer and realizes that Hideyoshi is sobbing.
He had to act calm in front of Eva and gave himself no chance to shed a tear. Alone in the privacy of this room, he is finally able to unburden himself.

"Who are you?!"

Natsuhi's heart stops for a moment. Did he notice her?

No, Hideyoshi is addressing someone else with an increasingly alarmed voice.
"How'd you get in?!"
"What's that thing?!"
"Hey wait!!"

The noise of a scuffle ensues.
Is the man in the room, trying to take Hideyoshi's life?!

Natsuhi frantically debates with herself. Should she burst out and help Hideyoshi or stay idle in the closet?
...If she leaves, she disobeys the man and Krauss will be killed.
...If she stays, Hideyoshi might become severely injured or even die.

The struggle sounds intense. Hideyoshi will die if he remains on his own.

Hideyoshi's life vs. Krauss' life.
What a terrible dilemma!

Before Natsuhi can decide, she hears Eva attempting to enter the room but stopped by the door chain.
Hideyoshi is bleeding heavily and moaning.
Hearing him, Eva screams for the door to be opened and repeatedly bangs the door against the chain, but it holds fast. She gives up and runs down the hallway to call for help.

Hideyoshi has fallen silent and the room is quiet again. Since Natsuhi hasn't heard anyone leaving, doesn't it mean that the killer is still in the room? Is he just standing in front of the closet, coming for her next? Natsuhi becomes petrified with fear.

Just then, Eva returns with everyone and Gohda cuts the door chain. Natsuhi can't see what's happening, but she can easily tell by listening. Eva breaks into tears and falls to her knees while everyone else files into the room.
Nanjo examines Hideyoshi and declares that he's dead.
Hideyoshi has fallen face-down onto the bed and a stake protrudes from his back.
The stake is embedded fairly deeply into him. It's likely that it reached his lungs.

People look around the room and realize that the windows are locked and the door had been chained. So how did the culprit get into the room in the first place?
The culprit couldn't have thrown the stake from the doorway since the bed is completely invisible from there. The culprit couldn't have killed Hideyoshi even if a gun was fired through the space allowed by the door chain.

Erika saunters into the room. She checked the windows and found that they couldn't be closed from the outside. Her eyes are sparkling with delight again, knowing that it is another locked room mystery.
She isn't concerned with Hideyoshi's body and tells the others they can do whatever they like with it.

Eva wraps Hideyoshi's body with the bedsheet and Rudolf and Gohda heave it off the bed. Blood quickly soaks through the sheets, so the servants throw another layer of bedding on top. The group begins walking back to the reception room with the body.

Kyrie tells Erika to stop playing detective because she's got to travel with everyone for safety. Erika frowns for a moment at the insult.
Erika once claimed that she has eidetic memory. She scans the room, burning all of the details to memory.

Her eyes land on the closet against the wall.
It's certainly big enough to hold a person. If the murderer hasn't escaped the room... Erika reaches for its door.

Battler violently grabs Erika by the shoulder and jerks her back. Everyone else is gone and they need to go.
With her eyes still lingering on the closet, Erika begrudgingly returns to the reception room.

Erika's footsteps finally fade away in the distance.
Cold sweat drips down Natsuhi's face. With trembling hands, she opens the closet and steps out. She had far too many close calls, but at least the hour has passed and her torture is over.

Natsuhi should get to her room where she is supposed to be. She tiptoes down the hall and starts to ascend the grand staircase.

"Natsuhi-san."

Natsuhi nearly jumps in place and she spots Erika in the corner of her eyes.
Spinning a story, Natsuhi explains that she came down because she was planning to return to the reception room, but she's not sure whether she locked her room or not, so she's now going back up to check.

Erika smiles and quickly figures out that Natsuhi is lying.
She tells Natsuhi that Hideyoshi has died. Natsuhi replies with feigned surprise, but realizing that she'll incur more suspicion if she returns to her room now, she gives up and heads to the reception room with Erika.

Other people stare at Natsuhi with great suspicion as she enters the room. It must be more torture that the man wants for her, Natsuhi figures, but she must endure it, for her husband's life is on the line.

Now that everyone has gathered here, Erika takes the spotlight and she'll sort out the sequence of events for them.

Natsuhi tries to leave, but Erika's authority compels her to sit down on the sofa instead. The game pieces cannot disobey Erika. She orders the door closed and locked. No one can leave now.

"Checkmate," Erika abruptly announces.
"Checkmate," Bernkastel abruptly announces.

That early in the game? Lambdadelta is laughing.
So is Beatrice; the game is far from over.

Since Battler left to play the fifth game, Beatrice and Virgilia are sitting by themselves in the rainy rose garden. Virgilia stops knitting and talks to Beatrice, despite knowing that she won't reply.

"Up to the 4th game, you've been conveying all of your messages to him. ...In short, for Battler-kun, ...it means you'd like him to realize all of the truths. ...However, he depends too much on you. ...So. Even if he was to continue the game for hundreds of times in this state, he would never be able to solve it. Just as if searching for the bluebird, he would only continue to wander for eternity."

It's the same for Beatrice, in her state of not really being alive nor dead. She is trapped in Purgatory.
Do you remember? "Abandon hope all ye who enter here" is inscribed at the entrance to Hell. The people in Hell have already given up hope, so they simply resign to their fiery punishment and not seek anything else.
However, people in Purgatory still possess hope, wishing to go somewhere, whether it be Heaven or Hell, but unable to leave.
Therefore, that's torture. The tiny ray of light known as hope torments them from the inside.

Battler must take Beatrice to Heaven or Hell, no matter which, to end her suffering.
Beatrice needs to open Pandora's box, Schrodinger's cat box, so to speak.

A single teardrop forms in Beatrice's eyes.

It is 13:38 in the human world.

0:00.
In a timeless place.

All pieces of the game, humans, furniture, witches, and the greater witches above, have gathered on the gameboard, which resembles a grand cathedral built of white marble and gold adornments and the ceiling far, far from the floor.

Three witches are seated in the highest thrones on the balcony. Lambdadelta, the Gamemaster, is in the middle, and Bernkastel and Beatrice are to her left and right, facing each other.

Lambdadelta tells all of the game pieces to introduce themselves, starting from herself (the Witch of Absolutes).
Then Bernkastel (the Witch of Miracles).
Beatrice (the Endless Witch).

Battler is next in line (fighting witches).
Then Erika (the detective).
Kinzo (hiding on Rokkenjima).
Krauss (imprisoned somewhere).
Eva (alive).
Rudolf (skipping on saying family name).
Rosa (killed on the first night).
Jessica (also died on the first night).
George (also died on the first night).
Maria (dying isn't a major problem, 'cause I'm still talking!).
Natsuhi (alive).
Hideyoshi (just got killed).
Kyrie (still alive).
Nanjo (still be around).
Genji (died on the first night).
Shannon (still surviving).
Kanon (also surviving).
Gohda (nice to meet you all).
Kumasawa (nice to meet you).

Next is the rest of the witches, who are sitting on the second floor balcony.
Virgilia (Beatrice's teacher).
Gaap (removes bodies).
Ronove (steeps tea).
The seven sisters of Purgatory (murdered Hideyoshi).

Next is Erika's furniture, the Eiserne Jungfrau, who are also on the second floor but separate from the witches.
Gertrude (assistant inquisitor).
Cornelia (assistant inquisitor).
Dlanor (Lady Erika's Grand Inquisitor).

Finally the Siesta sisters guards (maintaining the progression of the assembly).

That's a total head count of 38. The goatmen don't count. Now that the introductions are over, they can start the show.
Lambdadelta asks a goatman to get her more juice. Bernkastel wants popcorn.

Erika orders silence in the room.

"I, Furudo Erika, shall make the indictment. The murderer of the 5th game,"
"is Ushiromiya Natsuhi-san. You are the culprit."

Erika declares, pointing at Natsuhi...

The Siesta sisters drag Natsuhi up to the witness stand.
Erika will show why only Natsuhi could've committed the crimes.
Beatrice isn't afraid of Erika. She reassures Natsuhi and drums up some courage inside of her. Natsuhi readjusts her posture in the stand.

Bernkastel claims the culprit of this game is a human named Ushiromiya Natsuhi.
Beatrice claims the culprit of this game isn't a human but herself.
Two claims for a single truth.

If Beatrice wins, then the truth behind the fifth game will vanish into the darkness.
If Erika wins, then the Fantasy will be annihilated from the gameboard. In other words, Beatrice will cease to exist.
It seems like Erika has nothing to lose, but she is still Bernkastel's game piece after all. If she displeases her master, she might be thrown away forever.

Erika starts off recounting Hideyoshi's murder. Everyone besides Hideyoshi and Natsuhi was with Erika in the reception room at the time of the murder, so none of those people could've committed it. Hideyoshi couldn't have committed suicide. By process of elimination, Natsuhi is the only one left.

Therefore, Natsuhi is the murderer.

Beatrice objects. Just by supposing that Natsuhi killed Hideyoshi doesn't automatically mean she killed the other five people. Erika needs to tell the story from the start and in the correct sequence of events.

"Objection. chronology is insignificant in the process of indicting the culprit."
"Objection. Furudo Erika is manipulating recollections by making the chronology disordered."

Lambadelta (the judge?) did get confused by the timeline, so she sides with Beatrice and tells Erika to start from the first night.

No matter. Erika is confident that she'll win this trial from any angle.
Erika describes how Natsuhi left the family meeting in the dining room at midnight on the first night. Since she claimed she was alone in her room until morning, Natsuhi doesn't have an alibi for that time period between midnight and morning.

The culprit
is Ushiromiya Natsuhi.

For only Natsuhi does not have an alibi.

...Oh come on, there were people who possibly faked their alibis.

You cannot conclude
that the culprit is Natsuhi.

As long as there is another person who does not have an alibi.

For Natsuhi, her alibi is only lost for the time period between 24 o'clock and 1 o'clock.
With that as evidence, she is claimed to be the culprit.

However, as long as the following possibilities exist, you cannot conclude so.

■ Isn't it possible for Battler in the guest house to commit the crimes?
■ Isn't it possible for Nanjo in the guest house to commit the crimes?
■ Isn't it possible for Gohda in the guest house to commit the crimes?
■ Isn't it possible for Kumasawa in the guest house to commit the crimes?
■ Isn't it possible for Genji in the mansion to commit the crimes?
■ Isn't it possible for Krauss in the mansion to commit the crimes?
■ Excluding Natsuhi, isn't there the possibility for someone else in the mansion to commit the crimes?
■ Is there the possibility that George and the others actually pretended they were killed?
■ Is there the possibility to reach the second floor without passing through the lounge Erika was in?
■ Is there the possibility for the crimes to have been committed before 24 o'clock?
■ Is there the possibility that the crimes were committed after 3 o'clock?
■ Is there the possibility to commit the crimes other than during the time period between 24 o'clock and 1 o'clock?
■ Is there the possibility for someone in the mansion to commit the crimes during the time period between 24 o'clock and 3 o'clock?

The culprit
is Ushiromiya Natsuhi.

For I shall prove the alibis of all people other than Natsuhi.

Naturally Erika will completely explain all of the alibis to prove that only Natsuhi can the culprit.
Let's just consider the guest house case. You might suspect one of the servants there killed the four people in the cousins' room. On that night, Gohda and Kumasawa were in the guest house. Gohda was alone in the servants' room while Kumasawa went to the sleeping quarters.
Both of them have lost their alibi, right? Both were alone on their own, with no one else to prove it.

You cannot conclude
that the culprit is Natsuhi.

Why?
Isn't it possible for Gohda in the guest house to commit the crimes?
Isn't it possible for Kumasawa in the guest house to commit the crimes?

Kumasawa left the mansion together with Erika after dinner and went straight to sleep until morning. Gohda stayed up chatting with Erika and Nanjo until Erika and Nanjo finally went to bed at 3 o'clock. Since both of them had been under Erika's watchful eye, there was no chance for either of them to commit the crimes, right?

Beatrice makes a request for repetition, "there are perfect evidences for Gohda and Kumasawa's alibis."
Bernkastel rejects the request. Well then, Gohda and Kumasawa don't have alibis after all. Lambdadelta agrees it looks that way.
Erika doesn't mind and challenges Beatrice to use the red and blue for her arguments.

"For both Gohda and Kumasawa, neither has an alibi. They were in the guest house and could have reached the cousins' room at anytime to commit the crimes. As long as you cannot deny that, you cannot call Natsuhi the culprit."

It may look intimidating, but Erika can fend Beatrice's blue truth off on her own. Bernkastel and Dlanor both say they don't need to step in.

Erika calls for Kumasawa and Gohda to stand and testify. Kumasawa swears that she went straight to the sleeping quarters upon entering the guest house and stayed there all night, and Gohda gives a similar story with being in the servants' room.

Erika had watched Kumasawa all the way from entering the guest house to entering the sleeping quarters. Then she used the same gimmick on the door as Eva did on the study room. She 'sealed' it with a piece of paper. In the morning, while other people were horrified in the cousins' room, the first thing Erika did was to check her paper. It was still there, untouched.

She waves a small shred of paper in the air.
"Therefore, I can prove Kumasawa-san's alibi!"

Kumasawa
has an alibi.

"...Good. What a wonderful alibi. Not a single crack. Kumasawa returned to the guest house along with Erika, immediately entered the sleeping quarters to rest, and did not leave the room until morning. In short, after Kumasawa returned to the guest house, she did not ascend to the second floor until morning."

With that, Kumasawa's perfect alibi receives the absolute proof.

As for Gohda, he directly went to the servants' room after entering the guest house and Erika put the same seal on the room. She saw Rosa return to the guest house at 1 o'clock, and went to tell Gohda about it. The paper in the door was still perfectly intact at this point in time, so Gohda did not leave the servants' between when he arrived at the guest house and 1 o'clock. After that Erika stayed with Gohda until 3 o'clock, when she went upstairs and never observed Gohda coming to the second floor.

"...Erika's seal proved that Gohda stayed in the servants' room up to 1 o'clock. Then Erika, who spent the time together with him in the lounge, proved his alibi for up to 3 o'clock. Then, after that, Erika proved that he never entered the second floor until morning."
"In short, after Gohda returned to the guest house, he did not ascend to the second floor until morning."

Gohda
has an alibi.

Bernkastel and Lambdadelta praise Erika, who begins to ride on her arrogance again. She proudly remarks that, as a detective, she can use the red truth even while being a human, so she is someone who exceeds humans. Beatrice warns her she's a thousand years too early to say so.

So when the gold was discovered, Battler got dragged into an emergency family meeting in the mansion at 24 o'clock. Only Erika, George, Jessica, Maria, Nanjo, Gohda, and Kumasawa remained in the guest house. George, Jessica, and Maria were playing cards in the cousins' room. Erika joined them for a brief moment, therefore proving that they were still alive at this point in time.

"Yes, I'll comply. In the guest house at the moment of 24 o'clock, George, Jessica, and Maria were still living and in the cousins' room on the second floor. Nanjo, Gohda, and Kumasawa were on the first floor."

"Also, since it's already nothing pretentious, I'll go ahead and let the deaths of victims who were around up to this point be confirmed. George, Jessica, Maria, Rosa, and Genji are positively dead. How can you ever pretend to be dead with a throat slit wide open like that?"

The murders did not occur
before 24 o'clock.

I guarantee
that George and the others are dead.

"...Furthermore, I say, at the moment of 24 o'clock, in the hallway of the second floor of the mansion were Natsuhi and Krauss, and Genji. All of the rest of the people were at the family meeting in the dining room. Of course, the murders hadn't occurred yet at this point in time. Genji was also alive and well."

The confirmation that people within the mansion
at the moment of 24 o'clock
existed within the mansion.

Addendum
It is already completely confirmed that none of them left the mansion before 1 o'clock.
(Excluding Natsuhi)

Erika gratefully thanks her master for supporting her. She was able to explain the scene in the guest house, but it would've been tough to prove the scene in the mansion since she wasn't personally there at that time.

Beatrice was going retort that everyone in the dining room schemed together and allowed someone to slip out and commit the crimes in the guest house, but now she can't use that blue truth anymore.

The trial looks a lot like the previous battles between Beatrice and Battler, but the roles are reversed. When Beatrice was the Gamemaster, she knew the truths behind everything, so she could use the red truth as freely as she wished. Since she is no more than a game piece in this round, she doesn't know the truth at all. On the other side, Erika can use the red truth because Bernkastel is working together with her.

Battler thinks back to how Beatrice readily gave out red truths to him at first, then lessened with each game. It was to make him become a worthy opponent. Bernkastel is different. She's not holding back at all, ruthlessly cornering Beatrice into checkmate.

...Battler now realizes Beatrice went easy on him, so that they could fight as equals.

The translations/summaries are up now. :)
It's not that bad; there's a lot of repetition and word-for-word stuff toward the end.

Wow, thanks for doing all this! I really wanted to play, but with no credit card or whatever, I can't buy the game, and that makes me really sad. I love your screenshots and summaries!

(Now if only there could be something like that for 1-4, lol.) xD

There is Witch Hunt (meanwhile...).
They have English patches for the first four games, so just install those and you should be all good to go. ;)

You mean for the beginning of the trial at the place where it is 0:00?

It's like a tea room. Think of it as running parallel to or as a metaphor for Erika's interrogation of Natsuhi in front of the family in real life, occurring right after everyone assembles in the reception room and Erika orders the door closed and locked.
