04:15 pm - Umineko no Naku Koro ni episode 5: End of the golden witch - PART IV Natsuhi is delusional.
This is PART IV.

Natsuhi wakes up in the study room to frantic knocking on the door. It's Eva, trying to get Kinzo. Krauss tells Natsuhi that Battler and Erika have solved the epitaph and found the gold.

Beatrice is surprised that Battler solved the epitaph. She will continue to follow Natsuhi for the time being though.

Battler and Erika lead all of the adults to the Golden Land. They are all struck speechless, then laughing and crying and celebrating in their own ways. Erika gave up her right to the gold, so it stays within the Ushiromiya family.
Rudolf, Eva, and Rosa mention that everyone agreed earlier during the day that if the gold is found, every family gets 2.5 billion yen's worth, and the remaining 10 billion yen's worth goes to the next head of Ushiromiya. Eva and Hideyoshi have no problem with Battler taking over the position. Neither does Rudolf, Kyrie, or Rosa.

Just as predicted, Natsuhi doesn't want to recognize Battler, nor does she want the gold split. She insists that since the gold belongs to Kinzo, it is only up to him to decide on who gets what.
Kyrie sees an opening and suggests that they go and ask the man directly about it. Natsuhi immediately reiterates that Kinzo doesn't want to see anyone.

Battler watches the spectacle of the ugly argument between the adults. The sight of gold has done away with their rationality...
The night grows late. The adults finally tire out from yelling at each other and move back to the mansion. Erika excuses herself and heads to the guest house. Battler is about to go, too, when the adults force him to stay with them for their 'family discussions'.

In the meta-world, Battler reasons that people wouldn't make a move that hurts themselves in chess, so there must be something for Beatrice to gain from having the epitaph solved.

"No. From someone solving the epitaph, this child will not gain anything."

"Yes. ...First of all, the gold in the Golden Land originally belongs to this child. There was no need to have it found, nor the need to take it; there is nothing."

"...That is true. May the riddle of the epitaph be solved or unsolved, there is nothing for this child to gain." "Solved or unsolved, there's no point at all. ...In short, doesn't that mean the riddle of the epitaph itself holds no value to Beat...?"

So the epitaph's riddle and massacring the family both mean as much as each other to Beat....
Whether the epitaph is to be solved or unsolved, Beat wouldn't gain something from it.

Perhaps Beatrice wanted everyone dead. If she meant to kill everyone from the very start, then she could've easily laced the food with poison or quietly killed them while they slept. Yet she announced her intentions with letters and mostly killed people in groups.
Perhaps Beatrice wanted to show off herself. By following the epitaph, the survivors are constantly in a state of fear. But who did she want to be in fear? There must be someone who Beatrice hated the most, therefore suffer the most by letting him or her survive to the very end.

"...Let me speak in advance. Battler-kun is not the culprit. Battler-kun did not kill anyone. This is something that can be said for all games."
Then does it mean that Battler is the one who Beatrice hates the most?

"That is wrong. ...Her goal was not to have you taste fear. It was not for seeking revenge on someone, either."
Perhaps she liked the process of killing people?

"...Thank you. So I shall grant you another in red. ...Beat did not commit the murders for enjoyment."
X = Y = 0 The massacre meant nothing. The epitaph meant nothing. Beatrice fought against Battler over something completely worthless to her. Fickle, fickle witch.
But to Beatrice, there must have been a point in the games.

"...In the next love letter and on, I recommend that you just succinctly write "I love you". ...If you step around the issue and make it too tough to understand, it's not gonna get your point across."
Beatrice remains silent. Virgilia gives a tiny chuckle.

It is now 23:49.
The Ushiromiya adults are at it again. Krauss and Natsuhi argue that since there's no written statement concerning the gold and the position of Master of the house, they need to wait until Kinzo's death and split the gold accordingly to his will.
Earlier they had rushed to the door of Kinzo's study room and knocked for the longest time, but no one answered. Natsuhi told them that Kinzo has both of the keys to the room with him, so there was no opening the door there.
It is obvious that Eva's side wants the gold immediately, while Krauss can wait. They spot Kinzo's audio set and decide to record their conversations from now on to have something tangible and hopefully fair.

Rosa asks Genji to bring something to drink for everyone and cold medicine for her.
Krauss and Natsuhi call it a day and leave for sleep.
Kanon and Shannon arrive with tea. They are forced to sit down and enjoy it, too, with everyone else.
There's a strange knock on the door. The only people who are awake are those in the room and Genji. Kanon and Shannon both know that Genji never knocks like that.
In the background, the clock omniously chimes on the hour, signaling that it is now October 5th...

Elsewhere in the mansion, Krauss and Natsuhi are pondering over what their next move should be. They can't keep the others from entering the study room or lying about Kinzo having gone missing anymore.
Natsuhi concedes defeat. Krauss embraces his wife and gently reassures her that he still has a trump card and last resort.

"When the Ushiromiya House perishes, it's enough that only I am crushed by the rubble. ...When the typhoon passes, I'll prepare divorce papers. I'll stamp them and leave them with you. ...Secretly, there will be property left under your name. Also, if alimony is added to that, you and Jessica should be able to live without inconvenience."
Natsuhi realizes that Krauss is ready to give up everything for her. She buries her face in his chest and cries even harder.
Genji interrupts the couple. He pulls Natsuhi aside and tells her that the mystery man wants to talk to her again over the phone. The sound of a clock chiming at midnight echoes through the halls...

Natsuhi takes the call privately in her room. This time the man demands Natsuhi to say what her favorite season is (Autumn), then to lift up the antique clock in her room. Behind the clock is a card with a tarot-like llustration and the character for "Autumn" written on it. Natsuhi is shocked as memories come rushing back to her.
The man says that he is indeed on the island, having arrived with Erika. He further instructs Natsuhi to stay in her room for the entire night and not call anyone. Natsuhi complies, because she fears that if she makes him mad, he will reveal secrets about her and destroy her family.

Back in the dining room, everyone is still staring at the door, where someone has now knocked twice. Kanon finally opens the door and finds a single envelope bearing the one-winged eagle crest. The hallway is completely empty.
Rudolf opens the envelope. A letter and something shiny fall out. It's Kinzo's ring.

The letter reads,
Congratulations. I recognize that Battler-sama has solved the epitaph's riddle beautifully and reached the Golden Land. All of the gold belongs to Battler-sama. And, the new Master of the House of Ushiromiya is also Battler. As proof, I am sending the Master's ring that Kinzo-sama left under my care. Battler-sama, you may don the ring and become the new Golden Master, and please give guidance to the House of Ushiromiya. I pray for the success of the new Master from the bottom of my heart.
Battler puts on the ring under the urging of others. Krauss returns to the room with Genji and spots the ring on Battler's finger.
It is 0:04.

It is now 3:01.
Battler returns to the guest house, where Gohda, Nanjo, and, surprisingly, Erika are still awake and chatting.
Didn't Erika fall off a boat, wash up on an island, spend her mind on a riddle, walk to and from the Golden Land twice just in the last 24 hours...? That girl's got endless energy... I'd be dead tired or just plain dead from the first two events alone.
According to Magical Gohda Chef, Rosa returned to the guest house around 1:00 and promptly went to sleep upstairs.
Gohda stays on the first floor to clean up and prepare breakfast. Nanjo and Erika bid good night and head to their respective rooms on the second floor. Battler enters the cousins' room and is met with silence and dim outlines of his cousins in bed. It makes sense; why would they be awake at this hour?
Without even changing out of his clothes or brushing his teeth, Battler slips into bed for slumber, faintly recalling that his father was telling him the family will talk about something very important, about Battler's birth, after they get up...
He's wearing the same clothes that he arrived at the island and ran around in the rain in, right?

Natsuhi has not gone to sleep. She recalls how she had the most difficult time getting pregnant 19 years ago. Doctors examined her, but no one could offer a reason for her barrenness. Without a child and her husband's business investments failing, Natsuhi felt threatened by Eva's family for the inheritance of being the next head of Ushiromiya. Natsuhi blames it all on herself.
Kinzo then gave a newborn baby from his orphanage to Natsuhi, telling her that he'll recognize the child as his grandson. Natsuhi didn't want to accept the adopted child. She prayed to the angels for a miracle, that she would be able to bear a child. She prayed to the demons to make the baby Kinzo gave her vanish.
Within three days, a servant, holding the baby, fell from a cliff and both died.
Natsuhi is still filled with guilt for having wished so.
Aww FFFFFFFffff, I messed up on the screencap
"No, you are wrong! Even if you wished for it, it was up to the fancy of gods, demons, and witches to grant it or not! You have not sinned. No human has sinned. You may decide that I killed them. No, I killed them! In your lament, I pitied you, so I lured the servant who carried the baby to the cliff and led them down from it!"
Beatrice replays the whole incident with her intervention. The servant walked into the forest, led by golden butterflies and beckoned by the Witch. The scenery around her changed into that of a golden rose garden where artistocrats were enjoying tea. Beatrice summoned Gaap and had her create a giant hole under the servant. The servant found herself falling through the air and looking down upon the beautiful tea party. That was the last thing she ever saw.
Besides the servants, only Kinzo and Natsuhi were on the island at the time. Kinzo laughed when he was informed of the deaths. From that day on, he devoted himself to the occults.
Krauss urged his wife to quickly forget about everything while Kinzo seemed to be in a 'good' mood. And so she did. Natsuhi forgot about the whole incident and that the baby even existed in the first place.
Did the baby actually survive the fall and is now the young man calling Natsuhi? Beatrice dares him to take his fight to her.

Lambdadelta and Bernkastel are making light of the game. "...When you quit being a witch, you should become a voice actress."
Bernkastel tells her game piece, "Furudo Erika", to be more useful than Ange was. Erika appears in the meta world and obediently agrees with her master.
Lambdadelta and Bernkastel are already bored of Beatrice and her serial murders. Her gameboard is now theirs for playing and they want Beatrice to be their toy forever.
Beatrice doesn't offer any response and the two witches gleefully claim the game as their own, angering Battler. He still refuses to recognize Erika. Day 2 is about to start. Erika assures meta-Battler that she will provide support for him. Battler swears again that he'll restore the game to just between him and Beatrice.

"Well then, wake up!! Ushiromiya Battler!! Welcome to the morning of October 5th!!"

I can't see any of the comments.
I apologize for that. I upload the screenshots first, then paste the text. All of the text are now up.
What exactly does Battler mean by "...From the next love letter and on..."? Is this a figure of speech, or referring to something specific?
Ah, thanks for pointing it out. I made a mistake. It should be "In" instead of "From". ^^;;
It's a literal translation of what was said. I assume it is canon that Battler and Beatrice are in love with each other? Or maybe it is a figure of speech to tell Beatrice that she should express herself directly.
I'm glad I could help^^ But what I meant was is that comment referring to a specific event in the story, or is Battler using a figure of speech to try and teach Beato something?
It almost came out of nowhere, so it took me by surprise. I don't know how 'searching for a meaning' turned into 'write a better love letter'.
If it helps, the dialog before that is, "There's a meaning. ...There's a meaning, to her, that is. And she's seeking it in me." Battler gives a small laugh and lightly taps Beatrice's head. Then he caresses it. Cue "love letter" line. Virgilia chuckles. Then Battler says, "I still don't get what you're thinking about...as ever. ...But I won't stop thinking. ...I'll still flip the chessboard around. ...Because I absolutely won't get discouraged...about the journey of tracing your thoughts. |
