11:45 pm - Umineko no Naku Koro ni episode 5: End of the golden witch - PART II
This is PART II.

It took a lot longer to write than I would've liked. I think I'll cover more gameplay in one sitting and spend less time trying to read every little bit of detail.

Natsuhi is in the beautiful rose garden with Kinzo and Kanon.
Beatrice appears, and Kinzo retreats to his study room since the rest of the family is arriving soon for the annual family meeting. Kanon follows Kinzo.

Beatrice warns Natsuhi to be cautious, since Kinzo's existence is supported by magic. If he comes into contact with anti-magic toxins, the magic will dissolve and Kinzo will be no more.

I think the toxins refer to the other family members.

The two ladies promise each other a tea date sometime in the future. With that, Beatrice vanishes and Natsuhi returns to the mansion. And then there were none in the rose garden.

Lambdadelta calls for a break time at this point.
"Kinzo is already dead, right?"

"Oh well. By now, this sort of method won't work against Bern. ...But how about you, Battler? Isn't this strange? Don't you have no choice but to admit that the magic which resurrected Kinzo exists? Hehihyahahaaa!"
Lambdadelta lists off various crazy ways to explain why the dead is walking about, like it being the work of Rokkenjima Syndrome in which an unknown virus causes mass delusion. Or an illusion created by the powder from the wings of mysterious butterflies that only dwell on Rokkenjima. Or an unknown drug created by the mysterious secret organization "Yamainu".

Battler thinks to himself,
Grandpa is dead at this point in time. There's no reason to exist.

and reasons,
"This world is the world before you peer into Braun tube. ...The world before Schrödinger's box is opened. Aunt Natsuhi said that she took a stroll together with Grandpa, and as long as no one can confirm that it's a lie, the fact that "Aunt Natsuhi took a stroll through the rose garden with Grandpa" can be presented to be Aunt Natsuhi's truth. So that's why Grandpa is able to appear."

Bernkastel applaudes Battler's reasoning.
Since Kanon is a servant of Ushiromiya, he is ordered to conceal Kinzo's death and accept the same truth as Natsuhi, so Kinzo is able to appear before him as well.

".... ...Even though Grandpa is already dead, he is walking around as if nothing had happened, because it's an illusion created by those who want to have them think that Grandpa is alive. People who have the same intent are able to share the same illusion."

"Therefore, Grandpa's illusion can't appear before those who aren't on Aunt Natsuhi's side.

That's why it's necessary to establish that he is confined to the study room and not coming out.
"

Since everyone believes the lies about Kinzo, no one ever tries to go see him in person. The illusion of Kinzo is able to continue to exist in the study room.

Only Krauss, Natsuhi, and the servants knows the truth.

By having all of them came up with agreed on the same story, Grandpa's illusion is able to exist as if he is alive on this island.

Lambdadelta is mildly impressed by Battler's deduction. Bernkastel belatedly points out that the crazy methods Lambdadelta mentioned earlier couldn't have been possible anyways, because they go against Rule 4 of Knox.

"Rule 4 of Knox. The usage of unknown drugs, as well as esoteric scientific apparati, is prohibited."

Note: the original Rule 4 is worded thus: No hitherto undiscovered poisons may be used, nor any appliance which will need a long scientific explanation at the end.

Bernkastel wants to make the game a battle between Fantasy and Mystery, not the Fantasy vs. Anti-mystery that it has been for the past four games.
So everything that renders the mystery into a non-mystery will have to be ignored from the very beginning. If Battler even began to pin the incidents on the prohibited methods, the game would be as good as over.

Bernkastel reveals another Knox rule.

"Because it's something clearly specified by Rule 3 of Knox.
"The existence of secret passageways is prohibited.""

Lambdadelta mentions that the rules are weapons that Witch-Hunter Archbishop Knox wielded to slay witches.

Beatrice, who has been sitting in the back of the room for the game, seems to be in pain. Lambdadelta and Bernkastel explain that by thinking of the events as a Mystery now, Battler is truly denying witches and magic, therefore tormenting Beatrice.

Note: Original wording of Rule 3: Not more than one secret room or passage is allowable.

Back in the human world, Natsuhi has managed to fool everyone and the family meeting was over without much fanfare. She thanks and pays the servants for their help during the meeting.

Alone in the rose garden, Natsuhi is joined by Beatrice for their promised tea date. Natsuhi reminisces about her footloose newlywed life while Beatrice teases her about it.

Natsuhi and Beatrice agree that they are now confined to Rokkenjima like caged birds.

"If that's what you call magic, then Kumasawa at this moment is the witch of feigned illness. She contacts us, saying that she's taking the day off due to a backache, only on busy days. It's always been so every year on the day of the family meeting."

"Oh, no, no, that's not it for Kumasawa. She's a witch of much, much higher rank. If you knew her true form you'd be shocked! Hehheheheh!"

Watching the tea party, Battler tries to talk to Beatrice again but she doesn't even give a smile. Bernkastel blames Battler for the condition that Beatrice is in. Her soul was killed by his victory.

Beatrice is still shackled to the game even though Battler has won because of the curse Lambdadelta put on her, but Bernkastel explains that it saved Beatrice.

"Originally, there were two ways to end the game. Either one of you admits defeat and resigns, or one of you wins by checkmate. Beat almost reached the former. So Lambda thwarted it and she narrowly avoided defeat. What a remarkable support in the game."

Bernkastel suggests to Battler that if he is going to kill Beatrice, he should be merciful and do it in one clean shot instead of dragging it out and making her suffer even more.

"...It would be nice if your intention remains unchanged, because I'm betting on you. Okay? It's something that I'll never forget. As long as this game isn't settled, you will never be released from it. Because even you are not allowed to resign from this game."

Bernkastel turns her attention back to Natsuhi and Beatrice in the garden. She says that, like Kinzo, Beatrice is merely a figment of Natsuhi's imagination. Bernkastel cannot see Beatrice because she holds no love for her.

If there is no love, you cannot see it.
Because there's no love, you cannot see it.

Bernkastel's denial of witches pains the present Beatrice. Battler suggests that perhaps an unknown person with the name 'Beatrice' was sipping tea with Natsuhi.

"...You're right. Lambda has not said in red the number of people on Rokkenjima on that day."
"Then, it's possible to claim that Aunt Natsuhi really was drinking tea with a woman by the name of Beatrice. Like how I can't deny your story, you can't deny my story, either. So you can't determine that the Beat there is an illusion."
"...Ah, the Schrodinger's Cat theory? That might have worked against Beat, but it won't work against me."
"Why."

"Because Natsuhi is there, drinking black tea all alone."

With that, the apparition of Beatrice shatters and Natsuhi is truly alone in the rose garden.

It was possible for Natsuhi to claim that she was drinking tea with Beatrice because she was the only observer there. No one could deny it. Does that mean something that could not be denied is automatically the truth?

Battler asks Bernkastel to only use red text when they must be used since they are a terrible weapon. He tries to tell her to leave the game that should just be between him and Beatrice, but Bernkastel refuses, because she is having fun.

It is 1986.

The annual family meeting date is coming fast and Krauss' business plans and investments haven't generated any money. Natsuhi is unhappy and relays the situation to Kinzo and Beatrice. Looks like everyone has to be fooled again about Kinzo having to stay in the study room during the family meeting .

Kinzo reassures Natsuhi that Krauss' business plans will succeed. Beatrice praises Natsuhi for her dignity to guard the honor of Ushiromiya.

Watching the conversation, Battler knows that only Natsuhi is in the study room. However, just by thinking that, the present Beatrice suffers.

"Last time, you declared in red that Grandpa is dead from the start in all of the games. However, you didn't mention Grandpa's condition before the games started. ...In short, it means that if Grandpa exists in this situation now, it's not in conflict with anything."

"...Then the existence of Beatrice in this situation cannot be denied. Outside of the gameboard, the number of people on the island before October 4th, 1986, has not been declared in red. So if Beatrice exists here, there's nothing strange about it."

The words in blue eases Beatrice's suffering, but she remains unresponsive to Battler's questions. Battler announces that he will view the story from her perspective this time to solve it. Then perhaps he'll understand her.

With the family meeting approaching, Genji instructs Kanon and Shannon to keep up their act and answer accordingly if anyone asks about Kinzo.

Unbeknownest (probably) to Krauss and Natsuhi, the rest of the family is starting to suspect that Kinzo is already dead. They know that Krauss and Natsuhi have a good motive for suppressing the news of Kinzo's death.

Rudolf calls Rosa and asks her to meet with him and Eva to discuss finance, luring her with the possibility of raising 200,000,000 yen. She agrees. When Rosa takes out her pocketbook to jot down the meeting date...

...She sees that she'd already written down "DZL with Maria" on the same day. Rosa contemplates the conflict for a moment, then approaches Maria's room where she's still playing with Sakutarou and friends with her decision...

DZL = Delzneyland, a newly build amusement park

A typhoon is starting to build near Rokkenjima and Natsuhi's migranes aren't getting any better. The telephone rings and it's Genji, telling Natsuhi that a young man on a phone line outside of Rokkenjima is asking for her. Natsuhi refuses to accept the call and hangs up.

A moment later, the phone rings again.

Natsuhi answers the call. It is from the outside line.
The caller talks to Natsuhi as if they've known each other for a long time, but Natsuhi is bewildered. She doesn't remember anyone like him.

Then the caller drops a bomb.
"...Don't say things like that. I'm your kid, isn't that right?"
"What's that...?! W-What are you saying?!"
"Don't say sad things like that, ...Mom."

Natsuhi is absolutely horrified and slams down the phone, but not before the caller announces that he is coming back on the day of the family meeting to take revenge on her for her sin from 19 years ago.

Bernkastel requests Lambdadelta to repeat Natsuhi's conversation on the phone in red. Lambdadelta is being fickle though and doesn't do it.

Since the phone call took place before October 4th, 1986, it is an event before the start of the game, so there is no need to confirm it.

With that, the story moves onto Day 1, October 4th, 1986.

11:00

The four cousins are admiring the rose garden.
Battler says outright that Ange couldn't make it because she has diarrhea. Maria scolds him for the language, so Battler revises his words.

"Eheeheeheeheeh, sorry about that. That's right, marshmallows come out of girls' butts. Ange isn't feeling well, so her marshmallows turned into syrup."

Jessica and George punch/knee Battler in the gut.

Natsuhi is getting worried. Perhaps their act last year didn't completely fool everyone else after all.
Beatrice reassures her, and introduces Ronove and Gaap to her.
(Gaap is responsible for the vanishing aspirin that Natsuhi couldn't find on the floor some days ago.)
Natsuhi commands Ronove and Gaap to follow her orders while they are in the Ushiromiya household.

Battler wants the game to advance quickly instead of taking a long time on Day 1. He realizes that instead of trying to solve the mysteries, he should figure out why the mysteries are set up and presented as they are.

I think that's "Ushiromiya family". The 右代宮 is Ushiromiya while 家 is the kanji for family.
