06:20 pm - Umineko no Naku Koro ni episode 5: End of the golden witch - PART I
This is the first time that I anticipated an Umineko game before its release. I will be posting summaries and screenshots as I go through the game, divided into parts. If I sound like stating the obvious, you are correct. I have never delved into episode 2 through 4 in detail, so most of the pre-existing elements in episode 5 are brand new to me.

This is PART I.

Good morning.
It's a new game by a new gamemaster,
so please take your time enjoying it.

Naturally, the game has already reached its climax.
The culprit is cornered and can only wait for checkmate.
So, indeed, there must be something that is able to look over things.

The difficulty level is Easy.
At this point, what will you be deceived by...?

In contrast to the mad witch she has been in the past, Beatrice has become a shell of her former self, silent and barely responsive to everything around her. Virgilia still takes care of her though and brushes her hair.

"Now the Golden Witch doesn't even ridicule Battler's moves. She doesn't praise or deprave him, either.

Beatrice...is already no more...than a living doll."

Battler tries to talk to Beatrice, but she does not reply. She is unable to make her next move in their chess game, either.
Beatrice is shackled to the game. As long as Battler does not win, she will remain under the curse, unable to rest. Battler mentions that he did make a promise with her to let her die in peace.

Since Beatrice is incapacitated, Lambdadelta takes over the role of gamemaster and being Battler's opponent for game 5.
Battler does not approve and states that the game is only between him and Beatrice. Bernkastel points out that Beatrice is pretty much unconscious, abandoning the game. The result will be Game Over, simply because she is not playing.

Lambdadelta asserts that she'll go easy on Battler and not play "perfectly". She will drop hints and make mistakes everywhere.
Bernkastel says that she'll take Battler's side.

To further convince Battler that he should play, Bernkastel reminds Battler of Ange's sacrifices and summons a replay of her horrific death, being shredded alive to make hamburgers.

The two witches see Battler as candy to ease their boredom, comparing him to curry-flavored potato senbei that cost 30 yen for a pack of two.

HAHAH THAT'S A GOOD ONE

Bernkastel reassures Battler that she'll support him until he wins, until she gets bored, that is.
Battler leaves the two witches and Bernkastel plays for Battler as a proxy.

Battler returns to the garden. Ronove shows up with more tea for everyone. He saw a part of the ongoing game between Bernkastel and Lambdadelta and remarks to Battler that, "There is no love," in the game.

Battler decides to play the game to recover the game board for Beatrice.

"...Just you wait. I'll get it back."

"...Itte rasshai, Battler-kun. And please... In the game without this child, please find something that belongs to her. If you can find it, then even if this child is absent, you will have fought with her."

Just say what it is, Great Teacher Virgilia. No riddles.

Battler goes back to the room where Bernkastel and Lambdadelta are. While he was away, they have already completed the first day of the game.

"That's right. Come here, Ushiromiya Battler. It's almost over, but it's the cute and elegant game that I created!"

Episode 5,
End of the golden witch!

Day 2, October 5th, 1986.

Everyone gathered at the Ushiromiya family reunion are dumbstruck and distraught, for good reason.

Six people are dead.

Ushiromiya Jessica

Her body was discovered in the cousins' room on the second floor of the guesthouse.

The direct cause of death is unknown, but her neck was slashed open by a sharp knife.
The wound is very deep, so anyone can easily see that she definitely died.

Noooo, Jessica! No Master Spark?

Ushiromiya Hideyoshi the stock jolly rotund guy

His body was discovered in the guest room on the first floor of the mansion.
He was pierced by a demon stake from his back. The tip of it reached his lungs.

He was lying face down on the bed, so it's hard to believe that it was a suicide.

Ushiromiya George

His body was discovered in the cousins' room on the second floor of the guesthouse.

The direct cause of death is unknown, but his neck was slashed open by a sharp knife.
The wound is very deep, so anyone can easily see that he definitely died.

Nooooo Tommy 2!

Servant Genji

His body was discovered in the servants' room on the first floor of the mansion.
The direct cause of death is unknown, but his neck was slashed open by a sharp knife.
The wound is very deep, so anyone can easily see that he definitely died.

Ushiromiya Rosa

Her body was discovered in the cousins' room on the second floor of the guesthouse.

The direct cause of death is unknown, but her neck was slashed open by a sharp knife.
The wound is very deep, so anyone can easily see that she definitely died.

But still the BEST PARENT EVER.

Ushiromiya Maria

Her body was discovered in the cousins' room on the second floor of the guesthouse.

The direct cause of death is unknown, but her neck was slashed open by a sharp knife.
The wound is very deep, so anyone can easily see that she definitely died.

Lambdadelta killed the favored witch-believer off?

A girl gets up, stroking her long hair, points at Aunt Natsuhi and says again,

"...You are the culprit, Ushiromiya Natsuhi."

OPENING VIDEO PLAYS

Going back in time to 1985.

Natsuhi rushes to Kinzo's study room, where her husband and servants are waiting. Nanjo informs them that Kinzo has passed away.
Natsuhi becomes hysterical and wails at Kinzo's bedside. After she finally gets herself together, they start to arrange for contacting the rest of the family about Kinzo's death and getting an autopsy and funeral for Kinzo.

Krauss stops everyone from leaving the room. He pulls Natsuhi aside and gets into a heated argument with her over his sucky business investments. Natsuhi tells him that some guy lied to him and never drew up a plan for a resort on the island.

Tired after catfighting with relatives? Beating up your child? Then come to the beautiful and luxurious Rokkenjima Resort! Coming...not anytime soon!

NASA? Moon in my moonspeak?

GO BACK TO THE KITCHEN, WOMAN!

The couple tells the servants not to leak news of Kinzo's death and dismisses them.

A little later, Krauss and Natsuhi reconvene. They start talking about money issues again. Krauss admits that he needs to pay back investors, but he lacks the funds to do so.

At this rate, Krauss will have lawsuits filed against him, too.

In a moment of epiphany, Krauss suddenly remembers that his father has 10 tons of hidden gold, worth 20 billion yen! That'll solve all of his problems!
The location of the gold is given in the Witch's Epitaph. Krauss tells Natsuhi to grab Jessica and that the three of them will surely solve the epitaph.

Natsuhi sees that her husband is being ridiculous. They argue again and she flees the room, plowing into Genji in the hall. She asks Genji for the master key to Kinzo's study room and instructs him to say he never saw her if Krauss comes asking.

In the study room, Natsuhi starts crying over Kinzo's body again, envisioning how he would sit up, pat her on the head, and reassure her.

Moments later, Kinzo appears. In spirit.

Natsuhi is overjoyed and wipes off her tears.
Kinzo is as nice as Santa to her.

Kinzo says that he met Beatrice, the Witch in Gold, when he was at the end of his battle. He made a contract with the witch and was given gold and the power of insanity.

Natsuhi asks Kinzo to have Beatrice lend her powers to Krauss, since he is the next in line to be the head of the Ushiromiya House.

Kinzo doubts the Krauss is the next head. He tells Natsuhi that a person doesn't have to be the firstborn or have blood relations, but that the role is passed to the person with the right spirit and beliefs.

Beatrice appears in a shower of golden butterflies.
Kinzo announces that Beatrice will determine who is worthy of bearing the one-winged eagle crest and will become the next head of the Ushiromiya House.

Natsuhi shows her resolve and dedication by declaring that together with her husband, they will overcome their (financial) hardships and guard the honor of the name of the Ushiromiya House.

Kinzo gives his final order to Beatrice: Follow the orders of the next head of the Ushiromiya House. Beatrice points out that the next head isn't determined yet, so she won't be obeying anyone until she picks The One.

Beatrice seems to be willing to help out with Natsuhi's hardships.

In his last remarks, Kinzo informs Natsuhi that Beatrice's gold is limited to his contract alone. The only way she can inherit the gold is by solving the Witch's Epitaph.

The magic has reached its end, and Kinzo and Beatrice fade away.

Some time later, Krauss, Natsuhi, and the servants are back in Kinzo's study room again.
Krauss is still in distress. He needs at least half a year to see the fruition of his plans, but everyone will know that Kinzo's dead sooner than that.

"B-but you said it, too. ...That our father is already dead..."
"Father has not passed away. He is still alive and well, as he is now."

Krauss is confused, but then realizes that the plan is to pretend that Kinzo is still alive. Nanjo repeatedly points out that the time of death will be easily determined when the autopsy is performed on Kinzo, but Natsuhi tells him that it's not a problem.

They will file a missing person report, declaring that Kinzo went out for a walk one day into the forests of Rokkenjima and never returned. The report will buy Krauss some time and conceal Kinzo's time of death.

Some time later again, Natsuhi is alone in the study room until Beatrice appears and ressurects Kinzo's body. However, it will only last for as long as Beatrice's magic holds out. She asks Natsuhi to keep the magic alive.

Beatrice recognizes Natsuhi as her master, and Natsuhi gladly accepts her new servant.

IT NEVER HAPPENED

Ah, thanks for this! I'm playing as well, but with a text hook/ATLAS dictionary, sooo... hahaha, I can understand the gist of the plot, but it sounds like I can at least double check what I'm reading! XD So far, it looks like I got the right idea.

Man, I couldn't believe what I read regarding Krauss's situation. Am I right to assume that... he got conned by some dude who was investing money into commercial space flights?!

i can't make the first sentence, but from what i got, he says something about some trips to moon that's one bad trip krauss XD and than babbles something about future, his foresight and prediction, that stuff (probably the same thing he was babbling about in EP1)
if someone actually gets what he's saying there please let me know ;A;

than he says something like "and of course i had to believe such an absurd story!!" than goes on about how ridiculous believng some apparently self-proclaimed NASA guy was.

i fail at japanese so i may have failed this translation. XD it sounds so ridicoulus i can't believe it LOL. i officialy lost my last remnants of respect for him, i mean, W T F ?!

That's what I wanna know! XD And no, I'm glad someone else is also "WTF???" over it because... just... how stupid can Krauss be? I was like "YEAAAAH" when Natsuhi got sick of him and told him that he was an idiot.

And then Krauss said those mean things to her. ;_;

Yeah, pretty much. I think the whole family's fortune is on the line and they could basically have nothing. Kruass is a total idiot.

And thanks as well, I'm doing the same as [info]demyx and having this helps to double check...and after a while the text hook makes me eyes bleed from the gibberish, so it's nice to read a nicely written summary of what is happening. :D

Yeah, I got something like... they would have to sell the mansion/island property at that rate. I don't think there are enough facepalm.jpgs to describe the situation LOL.

I'm actually amazed that I'm able to get anything out of that translation, sometimes half the sentence isn't even translated! XD

Thanks very much for posting this. 8D Good to know what's going on in detail, as much as summaries are always nice.
